For more than 200 years, “U Triunfu ra Marunnuzza” feast has been celebrated in honor of Maria Immacolata, a particularly important moment for Ciminna. Its origin probably dates back to an event that occurred in 1781. According to tradition, the friars of the Convent of San Francesco D’Assisi in Ciminna had commissioned the creation of a wooden statue of Maria Immacolata with a delivery deadline of 7 December, the eve of Immacolata.
“U Triunfu” would therefore be the re-enactment of that night in which the arrival of the new simulacrum was awaited, a small statue of Maria Immacolata carried in triumph through the streets of the town. Since then, “U Triunfu” has taken place annually, on the night between Saturday and Sunday following Maria Immacolata, a nocturnal procession which has San Francesco d’Assisi Church of as its starting and finishing point, accompanied by the marching band and popular chants and is preceded by the “mazzuna” torchlight procession and the “vampe” bonfire. Linked to the religious festival is the preparation of “Nfriulata”, which is a calzone filled with minced pork, tomato pulp, onions, spices and various herbs cooked in a wood oven
