The chapel’s origin is unknown, but it is documented as early as the 17th century. It can almost certainly be identified with the rural church of Santa Maria di Cozzo Ferrato, also known as Mont Serat or Monserrato.
The name Monferrato may derive from a popular adaptation of Monserrato, reflecting the widespread devotion to Our Lady of Montserrat during Spanish rule in Sicily. Inside, the central wall features a stucco image of the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus
